Dakar, Oct 2 (APS) – The senior vice-president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, has resigned from her position due to her candidacy for the presidency of the said financial institution.
”Following the South African government’s approval of my candidacy for the position of President of the African Development Bank in 2025, I have taken the decision to immediately resign from the bank,” reports the website of the AfDB, quoting Ms. Tshabalala.
”This decision is in accordance with the rules and regulations of the bank,” added the South African candidate, specifying that she left her position to ”avoid any potential conflict of interest in the context of [sa] candidature’’.
She says she ”was very honored to take on the role of senior vice-president of Africa’s leading financial institution”. ”I had the honor of working under the leadership of President Adesina, whom I thank for his leadership and unwavering support.”
Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala joined the African Development Bank in 2018 as vice president of finance and chief financial officer of the institution.
Then, she was appointed Senior Vice President of the ADB in November 2021.
“Exemplary work”
”Ms Swazi Tshabalala has been a very important member of the senior management of the bank. I congratulate her for her significant contribution to the bank’s activities over the past six years, particularly the actions she has taken within the management team to successfully carry out our operations,” said the president of the bank. AfDB, the Nigerian Akinwumi Adesina.
”I thank her for her exemplary work and the services she provided to the African Development Bank Group,” he continued.
Former Senegalese minister Amadou Hott is also a candidate for the election of ADB president scheduled for May 2025.
Due to the candidacy he is preparing, Mr. Hott resigned from his position as special envoy of the president of the said financial institution, in charge of the Alliance for Green Infrastructure in Africa.
Former Minister of Economy, Planning and Cooperation of Senegal, he also served as vice-president of the ADB, responsible for electricity, energy, green growth and climate change.
The 51-year-old economist and banker was special advisor to the President of the Republic, Macky Sall (2012-2024), and general director of the Priority Investment Guarantee Fund.
