Driving license: a rule too often forgotten by Walloons

Dince October 1, 2020, in the event of traffic jams, drivers must create a corridor between the left lane and the right lane, moving aside on either side of the road to allow any emergency services to pass. On a three-lane road, the corridor is provided between the left lane and the central lane.

The practice is applied everywhere in Belgium as soon as a slowdown or a traffic jam forms, on a public road with at least two traffic lanes (in the same direction) and even in the presence of an emergency lane. , recalls the AWSR.

A poll that screams truth

According to a survey carried out among some 1,000 Walloon drivers, 72% do not know exactly when or how to apply the rule. Nearly a third also do not know on which type of road it is compulsory.

The AWSR points out that the emergency corridor saves emergency services an average of four minutes, which can significantly increase the chances of survival of injured people. “The system can only work if all drivers adopt it,” insists the Walloon agency. “A single poorly positioned driver can block emergency services. »

It will therefore take advantage of the beginning of October to launch an information campaign on the operation and usefulness of the emergency corridor, via its social networks and its website. In November, the AWSR is also planning posters along motorways and secondary roads to raise awareness among Walloon drivers.
