Ousmane Sonko will be the head of the Pastef list

The Senegalese legislative elections scheduled for November 17, 2024 are being actively prepared, with the announcement of certain top candidates, notably that of Pastef. The ruling party has formalized the candidacy of its leader, Ousmane Sonko, current Prime Minister, to lead its list during this election. This confirmation was made by Ayib Daffé, party representative, when submitting candidacies to the General Directorate of Elections.

For Ousmane Sonko, it’s a return to basics. Indeed, he had taken his first steps in politics as a deputy, but was unable to stand for re-election in the 2022 legislative elections due to problems on the list of his Yewwi Askan Wi coalition. This time, as head of government, he is once again placed in first position. However, if Sonko is elected deputy, it is very likely that he will let his deputy sit in his place in the National Assembly.

These elections are of capital importance for the current government. After six months in power, the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, dissolved the National Assembly, seeking to obtain a parliamentary majority. The Prime Minister and the President hope to consolidate their position in order to implement their political program for the years to come. The November vote will determine future MPs and directly influence the adoption of laws that will shape the country.
