SENEGAL- SANTE / Fatick: two cases of rabies recorded between 2023 and 2024 – Senegalese press agency

Fatick, September 28 (APS) – Two cases of human rabies, one of which last year and another this year, were recorded by the regional health directorate of Fatick (center), reported Saturday, Mame Fatou Thioune, regional director of the Livestock breeding and animal production.

She spoke thus during World Rabies Day celebrated on September 28 each year, coinciding with the date of death of Louis Pasteur, the discoverer of the rabies vaccine.

”Vaccination of dogs remains a preferred activity for controlling the dog population. For this year, 86 dogs were vaccinated free of charge by our services in the Gossas department,” also said the regional director of Livestock and Animal Production.

Mame Fatou Thioune added that 123 dogs were slaughtered with the support of the local authorities of Foundiougne and Gossas, ensuring that the department of Fatick intends to carry out this same activity at the end of the winter.

“Reports showed 47 suspected cases of dog bites in 2023 compared to 25 in 2024. Other cases of bites caused by other animals were also noted,” she added.
