Ontario’s second annual Test Your Smoke Alarm Day takes place on September 28

Ontarians urged to take action and test their smoke alarms

BRAMPTON, ON, the 28 sept. 2024 /CNW/ – The Office of the Fire Marshal (OFM) once again encourages all residents of theOntario to protect their families from fires by installing working smoke alarms.

In 2023, theOntario suffered 123 fire-related deaths due to 111 fatal fires. Although the number of fire-related deaths is reduced compared to last year, the number of fatal fires has increased. The BCI and the fire services of theOntario continue to be affected by the upward trend in the number of fire-related deaths and the number of fatal fires.

The law requires that a working smoke alarm must be installed on every floor and outside of all sleeping areas in every home.Ontario.

The Day ‘Test your smoke alarms’ will take place for the second time in Ontario on September 28 and the BCI wants everyone to take a moment to test their smoke alarms by using the test button, replacing the batteries and making sure no alarm is more than 10 years old .

“A residential fire can start in even the most fire-safe homes. Being prepared for a fire requires having a working smoke alarm and a well-prepared escape plan,” said the fire marshal, Jon Pegg. “If you don’t already, hit the test button and start your monthly test today.”

To promote the day ‘Test your smoke alarms’the BCI has developed a series of digital and physical materials for fire services across theOntariowho, over the past few weeks, have enthusiastically promoted the day on social media channels and digital bulletin boards, in municipal offices, libraries, community centers and arenas.

‘Ensuring our smoke alarms are working properly is a simple, but essential, action that can protect our homes, property and families from the devastating effects of fire,’ said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. ‘I am committed to testing my smoke alarms every month and I invite all home and business owners to do the same. Together, let’s take the step of testing our smoke alarms and ensure the fire safety of communities across theOntario.’

Test your alarms and rest assured knowing the device is ready to warn you and your family in the event of a fire.

Quick facts:

  • The majority of fatal fires occur in homes where smoke alarms are not functional.
  • Smoke alarms should be tested monthly and batteries should be replaced at least once a year. Smoke alarms must be replaced after 10 years of service.
  • In Ontariosince 2006, the law requires smoke alarms to be installed on every floor and outside of all sleeping areas.
