The PLR renounces presenting a candidate to succeed Jacques Gerber in the Jura government

The PLR has decided not to present a candidate for the by-election of 24 November in the Jura government, following the announced departure of the Minister of Economy and Health Jacques Gerber (PLR). The decision was taken by a large majority, the party said on Wednesday.

After several potential candidates gave up on running, the steering committee of the PLR of Jura abandoned the idea of presenting a candidate at all costs, the press release states. This strategy was validated by the party’s general assembly on Wednesday.

This decision “signifies the desire to give new impetus to the party, with healthy and solid foundations”, the text adds. It is “the culmination of broader reflections on the place of the PLR within the Jura political spectrum” with a view to the cantonal elections in autumn 2025.

“Mr. Ukraine”

Jacques Gerber, 51, announced at the beginning of September his resignation from the Jura government for December 31, 2024, after having been appointed delegate of the Confederation for Ukraine by the Federal Council.

The Jura native will have to take charge of the working group responsible for setting up the programme for Ukraine. This programme aims to guarantee effective and targeted support for the country ravaged by a war of invasion from Russia.
