Isabelle Huppert, Xavier Dolan, tribute to Alain Delon… The 2024 Lumière festival program unveiled

The 7th art is once again honored in Lyon during the Lumière festival. On the program: numerous masterclasses, powerful screenings and even film concerts at the Lyon auditorium.

Almost ten days of packed programming to celebrate the 15th anniversary of an unmissable event in Lyon. The Lumière festival unveiled its entire 2024 program this Wednesday, September 11. On the menu: retrospectives, meetings with several big names in international cinema, but also special evenings with film concerts and previews.

• Five retrospectives, from Huppert to Mifune

Like last year, five complete retrospectives are being presented at the Lumière festival. The first one is no surprise, and will honor the recipient of the 2024 Lumière Prize: Isabelle Huppert. Thirteen of her films will be presented during the festival.

Fred Zinnemann, winner of six Oscars and a figure of classic American cinema, will also be highlighted. On the other side of the globe, it is also the 7th Japanese art that is celebrated in Lyon with a dozen films starring the most famous actor of the Land of the Rising Sun: Toshiro Mifune.

A retrospective will also focus on Mexican director Matilde Landeta with three of her films. Finally, a final event will honor Franco-Greek filmmaker Costa-Gavras.

• Several masterclasses and previews

Red film of the festival, Isabelle Huppert will meet the public on several occasions. In addition to the ceremony to present her Lumière Award on Friday, October 18, she will hold a masterclass on the same day at 3 p.m.

Xavier Dolan will be in Lyon for a masterclass on October 13, but also during an exceptional evening the following day at the Lyon auditorium. Vanessa Paradis, for her part, will hold her masterclass on Sunday, October 13 as well.

The next day, it will be Benicio del Toro’s turn to present his masterclass. Justine Triet, Marin Karmitz, Alexandra Aja, Alfonso Cuarón or Icíar Bollaín will also follow.

As for previews, seven films will be presented exclusively in the capital of Gaul. These are: NorahBy Tawfik Alzaidi, A fanfare by Emmanuel Courcol, The most precious of goods by Michel Hazanavicius, Spectators! d’Arnaud Desplechin, The Substance by Coralie Fargeat, Three friends by Emmanuel Mouret and finally Three kilometers to the end of the world d’Emanuel Pârvu.

• Celebrations throughout the festival

The Lumière festival will be punctuated, in addition to its many screenings, by major highlights. Starting with the opening night where a tribute will be paid to Costa-Gavras, and ending with the closing night.

Short films by Charles Chaplin will be screened, for example, and the new wave of Japanese cinema by Yasuzo Masumura will be highlighted. The festival will also celebrate the centenary of the audacious filmmaker Yannick Bellon, but will also take the time to say goodbye to Alain Delon.

A giant movie night called “Journey to the End of Horror” is being organized for those who love a thrill. Hosted by Alexandre Aja, it will be held on October 19. Four cult horror films will be screened: Heredity By Ari Aster, The Hill Has Eyes by Alexandre Aja, The Night Claws by Wes Craven and The Exorcist (Director’s cut) de William Friedkin.

Finally, the Lumière festival will offer two film concerts. The first screening will be that of Vampire by Carl Theodor Dreyer, on Thursday, October 17 at 8 p.m. at the Lyon auditorium. The second will be held at the same location on Saturday, October 19 at 11 a.m. and will honor the duo Charles Vanel and Sandra Milowanoff in Icelandic fisherman by Jacques de Baroncelli, accompanied on the organ.

Not forgetting all the screenings of cult films, family films, documentaries and even the great classics of the 7th art. The meeting is from October 12 to 20.
