Following Emmanuel Macron’s refusal to appoint an NFP government, La France Insoumise announced that it would activate Article 68 of the Constitution against the President of the Republic.

Will other personalities cross the Rubicon? The day after Emmanuel Macron’s decision to officially dismiss a government from the New Popular Front (NFP), – which, with the largest contingent at the Palais Bourbon, claims Matignon -, La France Insoumise has decided to carry out its threat. Namely: launch impeachment proceedings against the President of the Republic, as provided for in Article 68 of the Constitution.

If the political coup has no chance of succeeding (given the many steps to be taken, including the vote of the Assembly and the Senate by a two-thirds majority), the LFI lieutenants, who had surprised part of the left when they revealed their intentions in The Sunday Tribunenow hope to take advantage of the decision of the head of state to create an electroshock among their socialist, environmentalist and communist allies. Now MP Sandrine Rousseau has come to bring them a small glimmer of hope. While the ecofeminist still considered on Monday that it was necessary “brandish” impeachment “at the right time”considering such an operation premature, she explains in an interview with Economic alternatives “now support this procedure”.

“When the option of impeachment was put on the table by LFI, I was leaning towards caution, because it is our only weapon in the event of non-respect of democracy.”the parliamentarian, the first figure outside of LFI to come out of the woodwork, also acknowledged to the magazine. The Mélenchonists welcome this progress. The deputy Paul Vannier argues that the procedure “will be the rallying point for all democrats refusing the coup by the autocrat Macron”. Even if, for the moment, neither the socialists nor the ecologists have joined the initiative.

“The president cannot break the NFP”

What to do while waiting for Emmanuel Macron to finish his consultations and choose a prime minister? Faced with a President of the Republic who would not want “play the game” of democracy, Sandrine Rousseau believes that the left must “adopt a motion of censure against any government not from the NFP.” Et “call for mass demonstrations”. Way to join the mobilization organized by LFI and several high school and student union organizations in Paris on September 7.

Although the Élysée Palace hopes that part of the left will eventually break away from Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s movement, Sandrine Rousseau is warning. “The NFP was elected on a mandate and a program. Perhaps some left-wing or environmental leaders are tempted to ally themselves with the center or the right, but it would be a betrayal of the voters to give in to this demand from Emmanuel Macron.”she warns. Before being categorical: “The president cannot break the NFP.”
