A tourist bus caught fire on Tuesday afternoon on the A1 between Yverdon-les-Bains (VD) and Estavayer-le-Lac (FR), without causing any injuries. The highway, closed at 4:00 p.m., was fully accessible again at the end of the evening.

The occupants of the bus, completely burnt out, were able to leave the vehicle in time.

The coach, registered in the Netherlands, was carrying 44 passengers, mainly American tourists, Jean-Christophe Sauterel, spokesman for the Vaudois police, told Keystone-ATS on Tuesday. There were no injuries, but the vehicle was almost completely destroyed.

The bus, which was traveling towards Estavayer-le-Lac, caught fire in the Arrissoules tunnel. His driver, a 38-year-old Romanian, managed to get out of the tunnel only to stop shortly after exiting. The passengers were taken by the Vaud and Friborg police to the Lully rest area, where the company took them in with another vehicle.

The highway has been closed and diversions put in place. After a complete closure at 4:00 p.m., the A1 reopened at 6:45 p.m. on a lane towards Yverdon-les-Bains. The highway was fully reopened at 10:30 p.m., police said in a statement. The causes of the fire are not yet known.
