MONTREAL — A woman and a man, whose arrests in Montreal were filmed and shared on social networks, face several charges in connection with the assault and forcible confinement of a 30-year-old man.
Silya Medkour and Ben Terry Edouard, both 19, appeared at the courthouse on Thursday, the day after their arrest on Cherrier Street, in the Le Plateau-Mont-Royal borough, in Montreal.
The duo have been charged with sexual assault with a weapon, forcible confinement, death threats, extortion, sexual assault with the participation of another person, fraud and assault with a weapon and causing bodily harm, among others. .
In addition, Ben Terry Edouard faces other charges for having broken conditions of release prohibiting him from carrying a weapon and forcing him to stay at home.
It was information that a man was being held in an apartment that led the police to go to Cherrier Street around 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Once there, they spotted “a suspect in a vehicle parked on the side of the road on Cherrier, but also the victim who was inside,” the spokeswoman told the Police Department. of the City of Montreal (SPVM), Véronique Dubuc.
“At that time, the police tried to arrest the individuals. However, the suspect started the vehicle to leave. There are several police officers in vehicles and on bicycles who intervened to try to block the car of the suspect to help the victim, ”reported Ms. Dubuc in an interview.
Images from a video posted on Facebook show this sequence of the intervention where the vehicle ends its race against a tree. We see the driver get out and place her hands in the air before being arrested. The video also shows two other men disembark at different times from the vehicle, one of whom finds himself thrown onto the sidewalk by the police.
The two suspects were also charged on Thursday with obstructing police work.
The victim suffered significant injuries before the police arrived, said Ms. Dubuc. The man was taken to a hospital where there was no fear for his life.
The investigation is continuing in order to understand the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping and the acts of violence against the victim.
