Last Thursday, the Public Services Union (SSP) announced a strike by Geneva airport employees and a total blockage of operations for Thursday, June 29, if the board of directors voted for the new salary policy desired by management. This one seems ready to go to the showdown. This Monday, she issued a press release justifying her plan to overhaul salaries, admitting that “it is possible that the movement (note: from the SSP union) will be followed and affect various services. Geneva airport expects disruptions in the coming days until a possible stoppage of flights in the event of a strike. Passengers are invited to arrive at least 2h30 before their flight.
Debts doubled
In short, the tone is not one of conciliation. The airport recalls that the two years of health crisis have “doubled its volume of debt”, that all of its employees were paid 100% while most were on RHT, and that various measures to adapt to the cost of living have recently entered into force, corresponding to “a 5.4% wage increase”.
Current model condemned, according to the airport
In addition, the airport considers that in the future its “overall income will increase much more modestly than during past years of strong growth”, because “traffic forecasts are close to stagnation for the next decades”. Under these conditions, he considers it impossible to maintain the current compensation model “which provides for a linear increase twice as large as the estimated increase in turnover”.
No pay cut
Cointrin clarifies that “there will be no reduction in salary”; that in the short term, 250 employees will be increased to take better account of their professional experience; and that in the long term, increases for 240 employees “above the salary band of their position” will be frozen. The airport wants to “steer the evolution of wage costs in line with the increase in income”, but also “better value taking responsibility” and “better reward good performance”.
