The countdown is launched. By 2030, the whole country will not have more access to ADSL, this technology that goes through copper cables. The objective: to switch the French towards fiber.
While the ADSL du Lot 1 (the first 162 municipalities) will be cut in the coming days, other lots will gradually see their copper network stopped until 2030. “There will be all seven by the end of 2030, explains Bénédicte Javelot, Director of Strategic Projects and Development at Orange, the historic operator who deployed the copper network. The first batch was the smallest but, as the deployment progresses, we will increase their sizes. »»
If the municipalities targeted for the last lots have not yet been announced, the list of towns and villages of the next three is known. A site set up by Orange allows you to know what maturity the copper network will be cut in your town. An experiment in “very dense zone” will for example be carried out in Vanves (Hauts-de-Seine) and Rennes (Ille-et-Vilaine) with a cut scheduled for April 1.
“Then Lot 2, which includes 968,000 homes for around 830 cities, will have its ADSL network cut on January 27, 2026,” continues Bénédicte Javelot. The closure of lot 3 – with 2,145 municipalities and 2.5 million premises – is scheduled for January 31, 2027, that of lot 4 for January 2028, lot 5 for November 2028, lot 6 in November 2029 and, finally , lot 7 in November 2030.
-When a lot is announced, it is not really a surprise for local actors. “There is a three -year notice period,” says Bénédicte Javelot. For two years, we ensure that the deployment of the fiber is very advanced. Customers are called by operators who offer them to go to fiber and mayors are increasing communication procedures. »»
And a year before the technical cut, it is no longer possible for users to subscribe to an ADSL package. At the national level, as of January 31, 2026, it will become impossible everywhere in France to subscribe to an offer on the copper network.
