They had dismembered a man and cooked parts of his body: the horror trial will open in May in Aveyron

Philippe Schneider and his wife Nathalie Caboubassy will have to answer for kidnapping followed by death, concealment of a corpse and attack on the integrity of the latter before the Assize Court of Aveyron. They are accused of having killed then dismembered a sixty-year-old living in Brasc. A third man will also be tried for complicity in this particularly sordid affair.

Four days of horror. From May 19 to 22, the Aveyron Assize Court and its president Charles Pinarel will delve into the sordid affair of Brasc's dismembered body. The facts date back to 2023, in the month of February. And always send shivers down your spine. At this time, a certain “Diego”, nickname of Georges Meichler, disappeared. In the village of Brasc, where he lived in the middle of a forest in a small stone house under renovation, no one has heard from him. The sixty-year-old, retired, no longer goes to pétanque as he used to. Her daughter, worried, alerted the police. She received a few text messages from him but it seems suspicious to her: she doesn't recognize her father's way of expressing himself and above all, he never sends text messages, she says. Nobody imagines what happens next…

“Don Filippo”

It won't take long for police investigators to discover it. Because three days later, they saw “Diego’s” vehicle in the town of Camarès. And this one drives every day with two people on board! They are Philippe Schneider, 67 years old, and his partner Nathalie Caboubassy, 43 years old. Both live in an HLM complex in the commune of Sud-Aveyron. After a life of travel, various experiences in large culinary houses such as Ducasse or the Hyatt hotel in Birmingham, the couple joined the department in the 2010s. Shortly before the coronavirus crisis, they had created a pizzeria in Saint-Sernin-sur-Rance where Philippe Schneider liked to be called “Don Filippo”.

“It’s going to be hard to hear.”

Why were he and his partner driving in Georges Meichler's vehicle, in full view of everyone? To the investigators, they will immediately indicate that it was a loan to “feed the dogs” and that “Diego” had gone on vacation… But this version does not hold up. And the couple quickly confesses. They would have argued a few days earlier with this knowledge. It would then be “accidentally fell”which caused his death. Then comes the horror story. “It’s going to be hard to hear.”warns the pizza maker during his hearing. Using a butcher's sheet, he cut up the body, cooked certain parts in frying pans and saucepans at the victim's home then threw a large part of it on the road between Brasc and Camarès… “He did not nothing remains of the body except one or two pieces of the skull”, Philippe Schneider made no secret, assuring that he had cooked certain parts for the purpose of a religious rite, discovered during a trip to Nepal.

That piece of furniture?

He now faces life imprisonment. Placed in pre-trial detention since the events, he will have to answer for the facts of kidnapping followed by death, concealment of the corpse and attack on the integrity of a corpse. His wife is being prosecuted for complicity in all these crimes. She has always denied her involvement. Another man will also be at their side. A young man from Millavois, a gravedigger at the time of the events, who would have participated in the crime scene and helped afterwards… Will appear free.

During the trial, in which the main accused will be defended by the tenor Me Luc Abratkiewicz, the question of the motive for this crime should be widely addressed. A real explanation for the horror was never given by the couple. Was it a question of debts, as has been suggested? Advances from the victim towards Philippe Schneider's partner? Cannibalistic, even mystical experiences, the alleged murderer having a particular profile as evidenced by several of his publications on social networks evoking the end of the world and many other conspiracy theories? The civil parties, seven in number, will be advised by two Montpellier lawyers during the debates: Me Laurie Peytavin-Stockmann and Me Yannick Mamodabasse.
