An submarine cable connecting Sweden and Latvia has been damaged, authorities of the two countries announced on Sunday, January 26. “This cable belongs to a Latvian entity. I was in close contact with my colleague Evika Silina, throughout the day”said Swedish Prime Minister Ulf KrisSSON on social network X.
For its part, Latvia announced that it had dispatched a warship to the place of damage, specifying that it has identified a “Suspect ship”the Michalis Sanas well as two other ships in the area. Damage took place in Swedish territorial waters at a depth of at least 50 meters, according to officials.
The president of the European Commission, the German Ursula von der Leyen, expressed her “Total solidarity” With European countries affected by damage. “The resilience and security of our critical infrastructure is an absolute priority”underlined the head of the European executive on X.
Baltic sea residents are trying to strengthen their defenses after the alleged sabotage of several submarine cables that have occurred in recent months. These degradations, targeting energy and communication infrastructure, according to experts and political leaders, in the context of a “Hybrid war” led by Russia against Western countries.
