Three people were killed in a Ukrainian strike near Kherson, in Russian-occupied territory in southern Ukraine, occupation authorities announced on Saturday. The Ukrainian army used “cluster munitions and remote mine clearance systems” during a strike on Oleshky, a town near the Dnieper River, which forms the front line between Ukrainian and Russian troops, Vladimir Saldo, a local official appointed by Moscow, accused on Telegram.

kyiv and Moscow have accused each other of using cluster munitions since the start of the conflict which has lasted for almost three years. “At present we know that three civilians were killed”added Vladimir Saldo, specifying that the victims were being identified. He called on residents to stay at home or in shelters. kyiv, for its part, said that four people were injured by Russian attacks in the Kherson region on Saturday.

Since the start of its assault on Ukraine in February 2022, Russia has occupied part of the Kherson region. Strikes are frequent on both sides of the front, while most of the fighting takes place further east, in the Donetsk and Zaporizhia regions. Russia notably regularly bombs the city of Kherson, the regional capital, from which its forces had to withdraw in November 2022 in the face of a Ukrainian offensive.

The United States has supplied cluster munitions that human rights groups say are particularly lethal and have long-lasting effects, drawing criticism even from its allies.
