The attacker of a jogger in the Gard indicted for “attempted assassination” and placed in pre -trial detention

The alleged attacker of a jogger in Vergèze, arrested last Friday, confessed the facts. Indicted for “assassination attempt”, he was placed in pre-trial detention, specifies Frédéric Kocher, assistant prosecutor of Nîmes.

The 25 -year -old suspect and residing near Vergèze, suffered from psychiatric disorders. He had been hospitalized in a specialized establishment four days before the assault and had benefited from an exit permission the day before the drama, January 10. The authorities did not specify whether this exit was temporary or final.

The victim, a 44 -year -old mother, jogged at the end of the morning in a park when she was attacked from behind. The assailant wore him six stab wounds, touching his cervicals, his chest and his shoulder. If his vital prognosis was initially committed, his state stabilized later. According to the assistant prosecutor, the suspect had no connection with the victim and premedied a random assault, equipping himself with a knife for this purpose.

Capital testimonies and big means

Two witnesses of the attack, including an out of service gendarme, made it possible to quickly identify the suspect. Their testimonies were completed by video surveillance images, which led to its arrest on Friday. During the search at his home, the investigators found a jacket and a knife on which the DNA of the victim was identified.

The survey mobilized considerable means, in particular 70 gendarmes, supported by drones, a helicopter and cynophile teams. In addition, 20 investigators from the Nîmes gendarmerie research section worked tirelessly to resolve the case.

This act highlights the challenges linked to the follow -up of people with psychiatric disorders, as well as the risks of acting, especially during exit permissions.
