This is not the most promising period for this thousand-year-old monumentwhich, out of season, only welcomes groups (especially schoolchildren), but still… A splendid Gard castle has just been closed to the public. For security reasons.
The castle of Sommièreson the border with Hérault was to reopen its doors in the spring. Will this be the case? It's still too early to tell.
“Necessary work”
It was the mayor of the town of 5,000 inhabitants, Pierre Martinez, who made this decision.
“Following the restitution of the security diagnosis carried out recently, I took the decision to temporarily close the medieval castle and its surroundings. This closure is essential to guarantee the safety of the site and visitors, as well as to undertake the work necessary to its preservation.

“Security and restoration actions must be carried out as quickly as possible, in order to protect this precious heritage and develop it in optimal conditions”, underlines the mayor, without specifying either the nature of the work or their duration. And therefore the reopening date, which is envisaged “in the near future”.
“These works are an investment for the futureto preserve our heritage and offer future generations a site that reflects all the richness of our past,” assures the elected official. Lovers of the Bermond Tower, built by the last lord of Sommières around 1200, will therefore have to wait to approach it.
