The Chilean Senate has adopted its members unanimously, a resolution in which it “manifests its support for the Moroccan initiative for the negotiation of a status of autonomy of the Sahara region, which means a permanent peaceful solution and sustainable ”to this dispute.

The resolution of Chilean senators also requests “the support and permanent commitment of the Government of Chile, in its capacity as a member of the United Nations (UN), in favor of resolution n ° 1754 of the Security Council of this organization, adopted on April 30, 2007 ”.

In the recovery of the resolution of the Chilean Senate, it is recalled that the initiative of autonomy for the Sahara has collected the support in particular of Spain, the United States, , Germany, of the Finland, low countries, Belgium and Portugal.

The Chilean Senate exposes in detail the positions expressed by these different countries in favor of the Moroccan autonomy initiative, qualified as “most serious, realistic and credible base for the resolution of the dispute (…) and to guarantee peace and prosperity ”in the region.

The resolution of the Chilean Senate was initiated by the former president of this legislative institution Yasna Provoste, currently president of the Chile-Moroccan parliamentary friendship group. It was supported by 37 senators from the entire political spectrum represented in the Chilean Senate, a majority and opposition confused, in particular the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and former Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OEA), José Miguel Insulza, current president of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee.

Last December, the Minister of External Relations of the Republic of Chile, Alberto Van Klaveren Stork, had reiterated from Rabat “the constant support of Chile to the process led by the United Nations for a just, pragmatic, sustainable, realistic solution , viable, final and mutually acceptable to the question of Western Sahara, as part of the initiative presented by Morocco to the United Nations in April 2007 “.

In a joint declaration sanctioning the meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccans living abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his Chilean counterpart, Chile had stressed, moreover, “the centrality of the United Nations in The political process and reaffirms its support for resolution 2756 of the United Nations Security Council, dated October 31, 2024 “, and” values ​​the serious and credible efforts made by the Kingdom of Morocco to advance the process towards a political solution ” .
