History and administration
The origin of the territory of Belgium and its name comes from a separation of Gaul into three parts carried out by Julius César: the Gauls, the Aquitains and the Belgians. Described as the bravest nation by the Roman general, Belgium was divided into two countries until 1795: the South Netherlands and the Principality of Liège. It was not until 1980 that it became a federal state recognized by the 1993 Constitution.
