Senegal records a remarkable increase in placements under electronic surveillance, going from 278 in October 2023 to 562 in January 2025. This development was announced Thursday by the Director of Criminal Affairs and Pardons, Yakham Leye, during the Annual Conference of Chiefs of parquet.
This increase is the result of the national strategy focused on the adjustment of sentences, aiming to relieve prison congestion while respecting the rights of convicted persons. Targeted training was organized for magistrates in Ziguinchor and Kolda, raising awareness of the importance of granting alternative measures to custodial sentences.
“These initiatives reflect our desire to favor humanistic and effective solutions,” said Yakham Leye. With this in mind, the 2025 annual work plan will focus on strengthening sentencing enforcement offices, digitizing tools, and installing new offices nationwide.
The Director also mentioned the finalization of circulars which will serve as references for the execution of sentences. Furthermore, efforts are underway to remedy long pre-trial detentions through awareness-raising activities and training of investigating judges.
