For its 5th stage, the Tour de France will pass to Caen (Calvados) and in its surroundings on July 9, 2025. On this occasion, departmental councilor Cédric Nouvelot proposed during the session of Monday January 20, 2025 of the Calvados Departmental Assembly to create a “additional challenge” for the riders who will complete the first time trial of the Tour.
A 33 km stage
During this stage of July 9, 2025the runners will complete a 33 km course, mainly on flat roads. They will start from quay Vendeuvrein the city center of Caen, then will exit to the north of the city, to cross the communes of Colomby-Anguerny and Thaon, before returning to Caen via Cairon and St-Contest, for a arrival in front of the meadow via the Cours de Gaulle.
Promote the department and its associations
The fourteenth kilometer of the stage will therefore take place between Anguerny and Thaon, in the coastal constituency of Cédric Nouvelot, who wishes to set up this nod to the department by proposing a prime to the runner who achieves the best time during the first 14 kilometers, a “additional challenge for competitors”.
-“This would allow us to highlight riders other than the winner of the stage or the yellow jersey,” he explains. He proposed the idea to the Departmental Council, “which was rather open to the idea, at least among the majority”.
As for practice, Cédric Nouvelot plans to include local associations of cycling, for example to install a timing of the runners in order to determine who was the fastest at the 14ᵉ km.
A proposal still under discussion
Discussions for the establishment of this bonus, as well as its amount, are underway, and the final decision will be made by the president of the Departmental Council Jean-Léonce Dupont.
