major breakthrough for the energy transition of Island

The Mafate cirque, located in the heart of the Réunion National Park and listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, is known for its difficult access, only possible on foot or by helicopter. This context makes the electrification of the site complex and expensive. Thanks to the “Mafate Solar Village” project, solutions are being deployed to ensure a reliable and environmentally friendly energy supply.

The project is based on the installation of photovoltaic panels associated with advanced storage systems, allowing residents to have stable electricity without having to resort to traditional, highly polluting diesel generators. This initiative is part of 's overall energy transition strategy, aiming for 100% autonomy in renewable energies by 2030.

Engagement fort du SIDELEC Réunion

Maurice Gironcel, president of SIDELEC Réunion, once again underlined yesterday the importance of this initiative for the inhabitants of the circus. “This project is a great example of SIDELEC’s commitment to a greener energy future, accessible and adapted to the realities of our territories,” he declared.

SIDELEC, the intercommunal electrification union of Reunion Island, thus carries a vision co-constructed with local stakeholders and residents of Mafate. The project aims to improve the quality of life of the Mafatais while preserving the authenticity and natural beauty of this unique space.

Positive impacts for the population

The impact of “Mafate Solar Village” is multiple: beyond the environmental aspect, it offers residents a lasting solution for the electrification of their homes, promoting local economic development and daily comfort. This renewable energy makes it possible to develop new services, such as public lighting, refrigeration of foodstuffs, or even Internet access for schools and health services.

In addition, by focusing on solar solutions, the project contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, a crucial issue for an island exposed to the consequences of climate change.

Project in the spotlight of 5

The interest shown by France 5 in this initiative demonstrates its innovative and inspiring character. The planned report will make the project known at the national level and promote Reunion's efforts in the energy transition.

Maurice Gironcel warmly thanked the film crew for their contribution to highlighting this great success.

Towards a sustainable energy future

The “Mafate Solar Village” project is fully part of the regional dynamic of sustainable development. With the support of SIDELEC Réunion and its partners. This initiative opens the way to new perspectives for other isolated areas of the island, which could in turn benefit from the sun to replace generators.

Thus, “Mafate Solar Village” shows the strengths of Reunion Island to combine innovation, preservation of the environment and improvement of the living conditions of its inhabitants.
