In a press release, the prefecture indicates that the detection of an outbreak highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI)on January 21, 2025 in an animal park in Dordogne, “reminds us of the importance of respecting all biosecurity measures. remains at the “high” HPAI risk level, particularly with regard to the possibilities of infections linked to migration. »

The animal park in question (Le Bournat in Bugue) has been closed to the public since September 2024. The measures planned in the event of a new outbreak were initiated, in and around the park, immediately after detection, with depopulation of the site, its cleaning and disinfection by a specialized company, according to the regulatory modalities, under the supervision of the Departmental Directorate of Employment, Labor, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDESTPP) of the Dordogne.

To avoid any risk of spreading the virus to poultry farms, the prefect of Dordogne has issued an order defining the regulated zones specified below:
– Municipalities are placed in protection zones (3 km radius): Audrix, Campagne, Le Bugue, Limeuil, Saint-Chamassy.
– Municipalities are placed in a surveillance zone (10 km radius): Alles sur Dordogne, Coux and Bigaroque-Mouzens, Fleurac, Journiac, Le Buisson-de-Cadouin, Les Eyzies, Mauzens-et-Miremont, Meyrals, Paunat, Pezuls, Saint-Avit-de-Vialard, Saint-Cyprien, Savignac-et-Miremont, Trémolat, Val de Louyre and Caudeau: in the area located south of departmental road 32 (delegated municipality of Saint-Alvère)

In these zones, all places where poultry and captive birds are kept are subject to specific requirements. Movements of poultry and other captive birds, and any introduction of new animals of this type, are prohibited, unless an exemption is granted by State services.

Biosecurity measures

In this context, the prefect recalls the importance of each actor in the poultry sector applying all biosecurity and surveillance measures falling within their responsibility, in addition to the protection provided by the vaccination system deployed on farms since October 2023 .

The purpose of these measures is to prevent the possible spread of the virus to wildlife and to limit its spread to the rest of the poultry industry, which would have significant economic consequences. The same recommendations apply to individuals who keep backyard and ornamental birds.
