Faced with increasing pressure on its water resources, the Morocco is developing an ambitious desalination and hydraulic management strategy. THE Minister Ahmed El Bouari announced a program to build seawater desalination plants, with the goal of producing 1.7 billion cubic meters of desalinated water by 2030, responding to the urgent challenges of drought.

This program aims to supply coastal towns with drinking water and relieve traditional water resources, particularly for agriculture. Several regions of the country will benefit from these new infrastructures, meeting royal directives for sustainable development. A way for Moroccoto fight more effectively against the challenges imposed by global warming.

A major hydraulic challenge

The projects include several strategic stations: Dakhla (37 millions m³/an), Casablanca et Oriental (300 millions m³), Tanger et Rabat (150 and 300 million m³), as well as stations in the regions of Souss-Massa, Oum Errabia and Tensift. A project which therefore covers a large part of Moroccan territory.

Morocco is also banking on “water highways”, with connections between water basins having already made it possible to transfer 580 million cubic meters, and ongoing projects to supply different regions. Large-scale projects, costly but absolutely essential to ensure a constant water supply and the independence of the country in the face of a possible lack of primary resources.

The impacts of climate change

The regional context is marked by a significant rise in temperatures in Morocco and the Maghreb, leading to prolonged and critical droughts. These extreme conditions threaten agriculture, biodiversity and food security, making these investments in water management even more essential for adaptation to climate change and the resilience of ecosystems and local communities.
