From the January 1, 2026Spanish roads will experience a great upheaval. Emergency warning triangles are over! Make way for the V-16 light beacon, which will become mandatory for all motorists. The idea? Boosting safety on Spanish roads (a real challenge for everyone who drives there).
The V-16 beacon: why it’s a game changer
The V-16 beacon is much more than just a light gadget. She sends a yellow light visible up to a kilometer away, even in foggy weather or in the dark. In addition, it has an integrated geolocation system which transmits your position directly to the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) in Spain.
Its use is designed to be simple and secure: simply place the beacon on the roof of the vehicle without leaving the passenger compartment (practical, right?). Some models turn on by themselves thanks to their magnetic base. With a price around 40 eurosthis tag includes a data plan valid for 12 years to stay connected with the DGT.
What should French drivers know?
Not just for the Spanish! If you drive in Spain, even from France, you will have to comply with this new rule under penalty of a fine of up to 200 euros. For our French friends behind the wheel, that means planning this small investment to drive peacefully among our Iberian neighbors.
However, be careful of the small limitations of the V-16 device. Even if its visibility is great in many situations, it can be less effective in places like tight turns or at the top of ridges where the triangles would provide earlier warning.
Our practical advice for being compliant
To be sure that your equipment complies with Spanish law, check that your V-16 beacon is properly connected to the DGT 3.0 platform. Models purchased before 2023 may not be compliant; so it is better to check carefully. You can find these devices in various specialty stores and online.
-Also remember to regularly check the condition of the batteries in your V-16 beacon (they last approximately four years). And even if the triangle becomes obsolete in Spain after 2026, it remains useful when traveling to France and elsewhere in Europe where it is still mandatory.
As Spain prepares for these new measures to boost road safety, it is essential that all affected drivers are informed and ready now. Adopting these V-16 beacons marks a step towards safer and connected driving. Whether you are a resident or just passing through after 2026, having the right equipment will not only be a legal matter but also a wise choice for your own safety on the roads.
