Re-elected for a second term as mayor in Oiapoque on October 6, 2024, Breno Lima de Almeida, the first councilor of the border town with Guyana, has not yet finished with justice. The Amapa Public Prosecutor's Office has just relaunched an action against him to contest his re-election.
Breno Lima de Almeida was the clear winner of the last municipal elections which he won on October 6, 2024 with 54,45 % of the voters' votes bringing him to the head of Oiapoque for a second term.
But we must remember that a few days earlier, he had been removed from office after being arrested on September 28 in possession of a sum of money which could have been used to buy votes. Released after paying bail of 100,000 reais, Breno Almeida was able to continue his campaign and win the elections.
But this did not put an end to the prosecution since the Amapa Public Prosecutor's Office returned the charge against him and also against his first deputy Artur Lima de Souza. He is accused of “illicit vote capture, abuse of economic power and abuse of political power” reports the Amapa Gazette.
During his first mandate, this young mayor in his thirties had already had trouble with the law. It was in October 2023 for a case of embezzlement of public funds. After a year of investigation into public contracts, he was arrested by the federal police and immediately dismissed from his position. However, by court decision, after appealing, he took over the reins of the city in February 2024.
-At the same time, according to the newspaper Seles Nafes, the elected official must also face the blocking of the sum of 300,000 reais on his account for non-compliance with the injunction of an order from the Amapa court issued in 2024 concerning the re-establishment of a health unit in a district of the city.
Between 2023 and 2024, this politician was twice removed from office. This new legal action puts him, once again, at odds with the population who, however, have always followed him.
