A U.S. border patrol officer was killed in a shooting in Coventry, Vermont, near the Canadian border Monday afternoon.

The event occurred on Interstate 91, according to the Albany FBI.

“A US border patrol officer was killed as well as one person. Another person was injured and is in custody,” the FBI said in a statement.

The person killed alongside the agent would be of German nationality, according to the Washington Post. The other suspect in custody is believed to be a US citizen.

The Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman, confirmed in a press release that the death occurred “in the line of duty” and that the patrol boat was assigned to the Swanton sector, Vermont.

The identity of the border services officer has not been released.

The FBI and Vermont State Police have launched an investigation into the event.
