The wolf is very present in the Cher department. This is what the prefecture has just confirmed. In a press release, state services discuss the various attacks that have been recorded in recent weeks in the department.
“Livestock animals were recently victims of acts of predation in the Cher. In December 2024, a calf, in the town of Saint-Christophe-le-Chaudry, and three ewes and two rams, in Bessais-le-Chaudry, Fromental” were attacked. Then, more recently, “in January 2025, six ewes, in Mornay-sur-Allier and one calf, in Loye-sur-Arnon”, specifies the press release.

“After in-depth investigations and analyzes by the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) in the field, predation is proven. The responsibility of the wolf cannot be ruled out.”
Elements which allow us to confirm the presence of the wolf in the territory. A video also made it possible to confirm this. “A wolf was identified on a video shot on Saturday January 11 in the town of Saint-Aignan-des-Noyers,” indicates the prefecture, which nevertheless wants to be reassuring.
“This species, protected, circulates throughout the national territory. Thus, it is not surprising that individuals are observed in the Cher” while admitting “that increased vigilance by OFB agents on the the entire department is in place.
-Concerning the damage, for breeders in particular, the press release mentions “compensation as soon as possible for direct and indirect losses suffered by any breeder concerned”.
Breeders meeting the eligibility conditions provided for by the regulations in force can benefit from assistance in financing preventive measures to protect their herds against wolf predation since 2023″, concludes the prefecture.
