Franck Peroux, 52 years old, has a passion for birds. Always. But not just any ones. His admiration goes towards canaries, parrots and other large parakeets.
Originally from Tours (Indre-et-Loire), he has lived in Saint-Étienne-de-Mer-Morte for 22 years. As an amateur, he created an aviary upon his arrival. Over time, more than a hundred birds fill the perches.
The vast majority of leisure time is devoted to them. Vacation? Maximum one week, “Who would take care of my birds?” » he worries. Because raising these little animals takes a lot of time. Food, care, surveillance against illnesses… Franck Peroux has learned to detect the first signs. Initially, he found his individuals in bird purses. Then, the males and females mated, allowing him to set up a breeding farm.
“They are magnificent birds,” assures the enthusiast. Hence the desire, around ten years ago, to present them in beauty contests. Very quickly, the birds won French, European and world medals.
40,000 birds in the competition
-Today, three of his birds have already “flown” to the world championships in Santa Maria Da Feria, Portugal, where 40,000 birds and dozens of species are expected. A jury examines them and will rate them until Monday January 27, when breeders will be able to join them and know the results.
“The beauty criteria are established by the jurors on the size, color and quality of the plumage, as well as that of the nails. » The ultimate criterion? The birds must be born in the breeding of the person presenting them. The birds are ringed from birth with a number that corresponds to the breeder.
“Among my three birds, one of them already has a world medal. It would be nice to know that he keeps it going, hopes Franck Peroux. In October 2025, a French championship will take place at Pellerin. »
