A fire that occurred on Friday January 17, 2025 at the intensive pig breeding of L'Aspizière, in La Boissière-de-Montaigu (Vendée), triggered a wave of indignation. Although the fire was brought under control by the end of the day, dozens of seriously injured pigs remained in agony all weekend, without intervention from veterinary services. The animal rights association L214 has decided to file a complaint against the State for inaction by public services.

Unbearable images

Videos broadcast by L214 show scenes of unbearable cruelty: pigs injured, burned and abandoned among the charred carcasses of their fellow animals. These images, filmed on Saturday January 18, demonstrate the total lack of help for the surviving animals, whose suffering could have been alleviated by rapid intervention.

Failures of veterinary services

L214 denounces the inaction of the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP) of Vendée, which did not organize any intervention despite the seriousness of the situation. According to the association, this lack of reaction constitutes a “serious deficiency” in the application of animal protection rules.

L214 alerted the DDPP on Monday morning, three days after the fire, requiring immediate intervention to rescue the animals still trapped in the building.

A complaint for serious breach

L214 filed a complaint with the public prosecutor of La Roche-sur-Yon, accusing the veterinary services of complicity in abandonment and mistreatment. “Their inaction for three days left animals suffering in extreme and avoidable suffering”declared the association.

A breeding model called into question

Sébastien Arsac, co-founder of L214, criticized the conditions in which these animals are raised. “No emergency exit for animals on intensive farms! This tragedy once again demonstrates the ignominy of this breeding model, which is based on systematic animal suffering. »

L214 calls for a radical change in the agricultural model. “Intensive farming is a never-ending source of suffering. It is urgent to build a food system that no longer relies on the suffering of millions of animals, day after day. »

L214 hopes that this complaint will push decision-makers to act to prevent such disasters from happening again.
