Mayotte: a case of cholera detected, one month after the passage of Cyclone Chido: News

The prefecture of Mayotte and the Regional Health Agency have announced that a case of imported cholera has been detected. Health authorities are taking the threat very seriously.

No respite for Mayotte. Still mourning the passage of Cyclone Chido on December 14, 2024, a new threat hangs over the heads of the Mahorais. Indeed, a first case of cholera has been detected, indicates Le Figaro. The prefecture of Mayotte and the Regional Health Agency indicate in a press release published Sunday January 19, that “the first investigations concluded that a case of cholera was imported as part of a flight from continental Africa.

To stem potential spread, the case, identified Saturday evening, was transported to the Mayotte Hospital Center a few hours after its arrival on the island. The authorities are calling on the population to be very vigilant and to “observe hygiene measures (consumption of controlled water, hand washing) to avoid any acquisition or transmission of the disease.

200 people affected in 2024

If the case is taken very seriously, it is because the island has just emerged from a cholera epidemic. Between March and July 2024, more than 200 people were affected with a death toll of five. Since a sick person can transmit millions of bacteria, an epidemic quickly occurs.

For its part, the Regional Health Agency has put in place an action plan dating from 2024 in order to “limit the risks of spreading the disease in the territory.” After a thorough investigation of the patient, “a team was deployed to the case's residential area in order to continue epidemiological investigations, disinfect the home, conduct environmental analyzes and disseminate health recommendations to people in the neighborhood.” A vaccination campaign took place near the patient's living area.

The authorities call to report immediately to 15 “in case of acute watery diarrhea and traveling to an area where cholera is circulating, isolate yourself, hydrate with drinking water.”
