The life of a professional firefighter is not just about putting out fires. Sometimes, certain interventions are out of the ordinary. This was the case this Saturday for 9 firefighters, who had to come to the aid of a horse which had fallen into a pocket of water one meter deep near the Vieille-Bâtie road, in the town of Collex-Bossy.

“The animal walked alongside its master who held it by the tether. He got scared for some unknown reason and jumped into the ditch next to the road. Muddy rainwater had accumulated there, from which the horse was unable to escape. We had to act because the water was very cold,” explains Captain Nicolas Millot. In all, nine firefighters, a veterinarian and two horse transport specialists were mobilized.

The horse, named Confetti and aged 16, was pulled out of the hole by a crane and a specially adapted harness. “We are trained for this type of situation,” assures the captain. We even use a plastic horse during some training sessions.”

Confetti returned to his stable around 4 p.m. this Saturday. He is doing well. “The commitment of veterinarian Stéphanie Vanhamme and animal rescue specialist in French-speaking Switzerland Stéphane Jean-Mairet brought a more relational aspect to the animal in addition to our technical skills,” welcomes Nicolas Millot.
