Climate – Belgium left behind in the race for “zero carbon”

In 2023, Belgian greenhouse gas emissions fell by 4.62% to reach 98.6 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, a reduction of 32.4% since 1990.

However, Belgium remains far from its objective of -47% in 2030 for non-industrial sectors, which puts carbon neutrality at risk by 2050. This is shown by the figures communicated this Thursday by the administration federal to the European Commission.

Emissions from transport and the tertiary sector (offices, businesses?) are still increasing. Industry, the main responsible for emissions, has for its part largely contributed to the overall decline. But the analysis shows that Belgian efforts are clearly insufficient to put the country on a “zero carbon” trajectory in 2050.
