The days follow one another and are similar for large communities or institutions present on the social networkformerly called Twitter. Since the summer of 2023 and its name change, other modifications have been made, including those concerning the algorithms. In Calvados, the Caen Memorial and the Beauregard Festival have already announced that they are leaving Calvados Departmental Council which declared to suspend its activity on this network.
Three major reasons given
It was Jean-Léonce Dupont, the president of the community, who made the decision to suspend the account of the Department of Calvados. “This decision is based on in-depth thoughts linked to current issues of digital communication and respect for online exchanges,” he explains.
Three reasons are given:
-- Dissemination of unreliable information : the proliferation of content with little or no verification harms the quality of public debates.
- Algorithm-driven debates : the highlighting of polemical, sensationalist and populist content biases exchanges and diverts discussions from their constructive essence.
- Growing climate of disrespect : insults, harassment and hate speech are increasing, moving communities away from their objective of benevolent exchanges with citizens.
The Departmental Council's account should be suspended from January 31, 2025. Nearly 24 hours after the announcement message, the post in question has only been viewed a little over 300 times and has not generated any comments. , while the Department has 18,000 subscribers. The fault is certainly with the algorithms… Note that unlike the Caen Memorial for example, the Calvados Department suspends its activity, but does not delete its account.
