Only 17 days have passed at the start of the year and is already at its second pollution peak of 2025. Indeed, this Friday, the yellow vigilance was activated in the department due to a episode of PM10 fine particle pollution. This event leads to a series of recommendations and reinforced controls.

Unfavorable weather conditions

Current weather conditions – a stable anticyclone, weak winds and nighttime thermal inversions – favor the accumulation of fine particles. The increased use of domestic heating means further accentuates the phenomenon, causing regulatory pollution thresholds to be exceeded.

According to AtmoSud, the association in charge of monitoring air quality, this episode is expected to continue until Saturday January 18. If conditions persist, a level 1 alert level could be triggered in Vaucluse.

Reinforced precautionary and control measures

Faced with this episode, the prefect of Vaucluse announced several actions to limit the impact on the population and the environment:

  • Strengthening controls on compliance with regulatory speeds on public roads by police and gendarmerie forces
  • Strengthening anti-pollution controls on vehicles circulating on public roads by the services concerned
  • Strengthening the verification of compulsory technical inspections of vehicles circulating on public roads by the police and gendarmerie forces
  • Strengthening checks for the presence of unclamping equipment on mopeds
  • Checks for compliance with ICPE requirements;
  • Checks on compliance with bans on burning green waste in the open air.

These measures are accompanied by health recommendations, particularly for sensitive people such as children, the elderly or those suffering from respiratory or cardiovascular pathologies.
