It was on January 19, 1903 that the Prix Goncourt was created, rewarding new writers in literature. It was made official a few years after the death of Edmond de Goncourt, a writer then working with his brother, Jules, who died in 1870. He had made the request in his will and the project was also defended by Alphonse Daudet, another author of the era.

Despite some family reluctance, the steps taken in court confirmed the creation of the Académie Goncourt. The first winner was chosen in November 1903, in the person of John-Antoine Nau, or Eugène Torquet of his real name, for his novel Enemy force. Since then, the prize has been awarded every year until the present day, except in 1914 due to the outbreak of the First World War.

Have a nice weekend!
