The supervisors were unable to save him. An inmate from the Val-d'Oise remand center (Mavo), located in Osny, was found hanged in his cell during the night from Sunday to Monday. It was prison staff who noticed this while carrying out a patrol around 11:30 p.m. The officers then called emergency services and attempted to resuscitate the 34-year-old man.

Neither they nor the rescuers managed to bring him back to life. The death was pronounced a little later in the evening. The doctor present posed a medico-legal obstacle, believing that an investigation was necessary to determine the causes of the inmate's death.

The latter was in the Mavo disciplinary unit when he was found hanged. He was previously placed in an Exit Support Structure (SAS). This is an establishment built next to the remand center which has been welcoming inmates at the end of their sentences since 2023 to prepare for their reintegration. The man found dead probably committed an offense which led to him being placed in a disciplinary unit.

To end his life, he seems to have used his cover. “It’s unfortunately very classic. The detainees use their sheets or blankets to hang themselves, indicates Abihourairi Velou, elected FO justice staff. We take off their shoelaces on purpose for that, but we can't take away their sheets and blankets. » Last year, the International Prison Observatory noted that 149 prisoners had committed suicide in prison in 2023, or 10 times more than in the general population of the same age.
