The Confederation of African (CAF) unveiled this Wednesday the hats which will be used to distribute the teams into the groups of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). The ceremony, which will be held this evening in Nairobi, Kenya, will will take place in a particular context, following the postponement of the tournament to August 2024, a decision taken to everyone’s surprise. Senegal, the defending champion, as well as the three host countries (Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania) will benefit from top seed status.

This new edition of CHAN will see the participation of 19 teams, compared to 17 during the 2022 edition. The final phase of the tournament will take place with four groups, including one composed of 4 teams and three other groups with 5 teams each. Top seed status this year goes to the hosts – Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania – as well as defending champions Senegal. Hat 1 is made up of Morocco, Niger, Congo and Madagascar. The teams in Pot B include strong nations such as Mauritania, Guinea, Sudan and Angola, who have regularly performed well in regional competitions.

For their part, teams like the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Burkina Faso and Nigeria appear in Pot C, promising interesting clashes in the group stage. It is also important to note that the last two teams qualified for the competition still remain unknown. The draw, scheduled for Wednesday, January 15, will take place at the prestigious Kenyatta International Conference Center (KICC) in Nairobi, Kenya. The event will start at 8:00 p.m. local time (5:00 p.m. GMT / 7:00 p.m. Cairo time).
