From Thursday January 16, 2025, 3,400 homes from Cherbourg-en-Cotentin (Manche) will be invited to participate in the annual censusa compulsory process, free et for purely statistical purposes.

“The City of Cherbourg-en-Cotentin is carrying out the census of its population pour better understand its evolutionses needsand so develop suitable projects. It is an essential strategic tool pour our community in order toadjust our municipal action », explains Pierre-François Lejeune, adjointparticularly to general administration.
The statistics from this census will also “calibrate the actions of communities in matters of of schoolsof mobilities, infrastructured’urban developments d’sports equipmentor even nursing home. »
From this Thursday, and until Saturday February 22the 18 census takers recruited by the City and trained by INSEE will meet the 3,400 households drawn at random by INSEE.
The households concerned represent approximately 8% of the population of the 42 sub-districts spread across the five delegated municipalities.
Each year, more than 3,000 households are recorded.
-“Then, every five years, we reset the counters to carry out a new draw. Thus, each household can be counted at best every five years or at worst never. However, as it is the addresses which are drawn at random, if residents move they can be recorded more often,” adds the deputy.
The census in practice
From this Thursday, January 16, residents living in individual houses will receive their login credentials in their mailbox to respond to the online census. Enumerators will also provide their contact information to be contacted with questions or to request a paper form if necessary. For residents of collective buildings, census takers will come directly to their door.
Concerning the accommodations selected for the “Families” survey, the responses will be made using the same process as for the census: online: an email will be sent after the census; in paper: the enumerator will give a questionnaire directly to the inhabitants.
The 18 census takers recruited by the City will have an official tricolor card, including their photograph and the signature of the mayor. These agents are bound by professional secrecy, guaranteeing that all responses will remain strictly confidential and will be transmitted to INSEE for anonymous processing, in accordance with privacy protection laws.
The population census is compulsory for selected households, but it is also completely free. The City calls on residents to be vigilant and invites them not to respond to possible paid requests from fraudulent platforms.
The “Families” survey
This year, INSEE is also organizing a further investigation titled “ Families», which aims to better understand the evolution of families and their history. This survey concerns 1,200 housing units located exclusively in the delegated municipalities of Cherbourg-OctevilleetÉqueurdreville-Hainneville.
Depending on the sector, the questionnaires will be addressed either to men or women, aged 18 and over. “This survey, carried out since 1954 and organized approximately every 15 years, makes it possible to follow the evolution of families over time,” indicates INSEE.
