Presenting her best wishes to the inhabitants of La Mouche, a small town in the south of the Channel (between La Haye-Pesnel and Villedieu-les-Poêles), of 251 inhabitants, Friday January 10, 2025, the vice-president of the community of towns of Granville Terre et Mer, in charge of culture, returned to a painful episode in her public life, which occurred at the beginning of 2024.

He marked the third term as mayor of this retired farmer. That of a violent verbal attack on the part of one of its constituents, who has been living in the town for some time.

Tears still flow today

And suddenly the tears started to flow. Marie-Claude Corbin had nevertheless promised herself not to cry. But a year later, the trauma is still very present.

As you all know, being mayor is increasingly complicated, from an administrative point of view, but also in terms of the violence they experience in their daily lives. It’s amplified when you’re a woman. We are confronted with machismo, with violence. Respect, let's not talk about it. It is a shame to see that more and more mayors are having to file complaints.

Violence against elected officials is increasing

Since her first election in 2008, Marie-Claude Corbin believes that the situation is getting worse every year.

“I’ve never experienced that. Fortunately, the State supports us in this process. » And the elected official continued: “For me, the role of mayor is to be at the service of the residents who have chosen us to manage our village. It is having a sense of collective interest to the detriment of personal interest, because sometimes interests mix. It also means being tolerant, caring and respecting others. It is also having the courage to propose projects which may sometimes not be understood at the time and everything else which is not planned and which must be faced. It is finally about pushing back the evil winds of discord and violence. »
