Transport of wood: the population says they are “taken hostage” in Bas-Saint-Laurent

The intensification of the transport of trucks loaded with logs of wood makes citizens of the small municipality of Saint-Charles-Garnier, in La Mitis, in Bas-Saint-Laurent, fear the worst.

“Our population is being taken hostage! Before, we saw people walking in the streets, today we no longer see that; all we see is the transport of heavy vehicles, people are afraid to travel,” denounced the mayor of Saint-Charles-Garnier, Jean-Pierre Bélanger.

Due to a detour imposed since June 2024, heavy transportation, school and public transportation as well as citizens must all take the same alternative route, an 8 km gravel road.

According to the mayor, the prefect, the deputy and many citizens, the situation has become untenable.

Everyone is asking the Minister of Forests, Maïté Blanchette Vézina, to intervene quickly in this matter.
