The Republicans announced that they would elect their leader on February 2 for the next metropolitan elections of 2026.
It is an election that had been postponed for a while, in a complicated local context for LR elected officials in the Lyon Metropolis. On January 8, Gilles Gascon (LR) took the lead of the Métro positive opposition group on the metropolitan council. He succeeded Philipe Cochet, who was ineligible for five years, after being convicted of embezzlement of public funds.

A first election which had postponed until later that concerning the leader of the Republicans for the next metropolitan elections of 2026. This Tuesday, the LR federation of the Rhône and the Métropole de Lyon indicated that the election would finally be held on the 2 next February.
Candidates have until January 27 to make themselves known
This will follow a meeting to present the ballot to the electorate scheduled for January 22. Candidates will then have until January 27 at noon to submit their application. “This designation process, widely supported by our elected officials, aims to choose in a collegial and local manner the personality best able to carry out an ambitious and sustainable project for our Metropolis. recalls the federation of Republicans of the Rhône. Before concluding: “The unity of our political family is the sine qua non condition and the guarantee of our credibility to bring an alternative to the extreme left and the environmentalists, to responsibilities since 2020.“
Gilles Gascon, who has already advanced his pawns with a view to 2026, could be opposed to Sébastien Michel, mayor of Ecully, also interested in the prospect of the next metropolitan elections.
