A few days after announcing his conservative turnaround, then taking anti-inclusiveness steps in his company, Mark Zuckerberg violently criticized Apple in Joe Rogan's podcast. He particularly criticizes the company for “haven’t invented anything great for a long time”.
Mark Zuckerberg is making his revolution. A few days after announcing the end of moderation on Facebook, then the cessation of all Meta programs in favor of inclusiveness, the creator of the most used social network in the world agreed to discuss with Joe Rogan, one of the most powerful podcasters in the United States (and one of Donald Trump's supporters). The podcast went live on January 10, 2025.
At Joe Rogan, Mark Zuckerberg notably addressed the question of his self-proclaimed enemy: Apple. “They haven’t invented anything great in a long time. Steve Jobs invented the iPhone and they've been relying on it for 20 years. I'm not even sure they sell more iPhones today, I even think sales are dropping. The new generations aren't really better, so people are taking longer than before to change.”wet finger analysis Mark Zuckerberg. This statement obviously did not go unnoticed, both by the brand's detractors and its connoisseurs.
Apple's great innovations in 20 years atomize those of Meta
Has Apple been lacking in innovation since 2007, the year it presented the first iPhone? We've selected its biggest launches in 18 years, deliberately excluding anything that didn't work or was just a small evolution of a product:
- 2008 : Apple lance l’App Storean app store that launched an entirely new economy and enabled the creation of millions of businesses. The brand also unveils the MacBook Airthe first ultra-thin laptop, which started a wave in the laptop industry.
- 2010 : Apple unveils theiPadwhich is still the best-selling tablet in the world today. FaceTime is also making its appearance and democratizing video calls. Finally, the little Apple TV appeared, which finally propelled Apple into the world of television.
- 2011 : Well before the generative AI revolution, Apple launched Sirithe first personal assistant. Siri was late today, but was a precursor to its launch. The same year, just before his death, Steve Jobs launched iCloud.
- 2013 : With Touch IDApple puts a fingerprint sensor on a consumer product. The entire IT industry is inspired by it.
- 2014 : Apple did not invent contactless payment, but Apple Pay becomes the most efficient solution for paying with your smartphone. The majority of banks on the planet are compatible with this technology today. Apple also announces theApple Watchwhich not only becomes the best-selling connected watch in the world, but the best-selling watch in general.
- 2016 : With the AirPodswhich are initially mocked, Apple kills the wired earphone industry and invents a new product category. This is undoubtedly his greatest success since the death of Steve Jobs.
- 2017 : With the iPhone X, Apple brings several important technologies. There is in particular 3D facial recognition Face IDbut also a curved OLED panel at the bottom to reduce the size of the border, which the industry will eventually copy.
- 2019 : Apple announces a transition to services. His most important success is Apple TV+which focuses on the quality of the programs. A few years later, it would become the first streaming service to win the Oscar for best film.
- 2020 : After a few years without major innovations, Apple revolutionizes the modern computer with its chips Apple Silicon. The M1 chip allows MacBooks to triple their battery life and gain performance, all without fans. Five years later, Windows is just beginning its ARM transition.
- 2021 : Apple launches the tracker AirTag. The concept is not new, but the product quickly becomes a commercial success, also with its controversies. Its competitors are far behind today.
- 2023 : Apple is making a transition to virtual reality with the Vision Prohis first “space computer”. Commercial success is not yet there, but the product is unanimously approved by its testers. The Vision Pro innovates in particular with the quality of its display and its eye control.
Meta buys a lot of companies, but innovates little
What about Meta? We have voluntarily removed from this list the takeovers (Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus), which do not really count in the innovation category:
- 2007 : Facebook launches into advertisementwhich will become its greatest source of income.
- 2008 : Facebook invents the like buttonwhich will become the standard on all social networks.
- 2014 : Facebook launches messaging app Messengeralthough it was previously a service integrated into the social network.
- 2017 : Facebook and Instagram bite Snapchat son format stories and make it an even greater success.
- 2019 : After buying Oculus, Facebook launchesOculus Questthe first autonomous headset for the general public.
- 2021 : Mark Zuckerberg changes the name of Facebook, which becomes Meta. The company announces that it is focusing on metaversea virtual world intended to replace the Internet.
- 2023 : Faced with ChatGPT, Meta AI innovates with Llama 2its open source model highly appreciated today. Mark Zuckerberg knew how to take the AI turn. The same year, glasses Meta Ray-Ban arrive and become a huge success. Meta also launches Threadshis anti-Twitter, before finally announcing that he was aligning himself with Elon Musk's policies.
- 2024 : Meta unveils several important projects linked to artificial intelligence, such as a chatbot system in its social networks. The company also reveals Oriona prototype of augmented reality glasses.
Meta is innovating more and more, but its balance sheet is far inferior to that of Apple. This list does not include the numerous scandals experienced by the company, which could have cost it dearly.
Mark Zuckerberg knows he's talking nonsense
Why is Mark Zuckerberg attacking Apple, moreover by repeating one of the favorite arguments of the brand's “haters”? Quite simply because Apple's privacy policy prevents Facebook from monitoring the activity of iPhone owners, which is causing the social network to lose several billion dollars. Mark Zuckerberg has never forgiven this affront and has regularly targeted the company since then, notably by trying to demand the right to ever more data on Apple devices. Mark Zuckerberg also criticizes Apple for taxing him 30% on sales in its applications, which leads him to question Apple's policy. Finally, there is also the question of political positioning. Apple is resisting the conservative wave launched by Elon Musk, making it a perfect target for the MAGA movement.
What about his other assertions, particularly on iPhone sales? This is pure fantasy, as iPhone sales alternate between record years and softer years, without the slightest decline having ever started. Mark Zuckerberg's analysis on the renewal cycle is also completely wrong, while the entire industry is observing a similar phenomenon. The devices have simply become better, which gives them a better lifespan.
By saying these words to Joe Rogan, Mark Zuckerberg knows what he is doing. The boss of Meta hopes to make himself cool among the anti-Apple, while scoring points with the sphere of the alternative right (which wanted, a few months ago, its dismantling). The truth remains: Apple is not the company it describes, far from it. Meta even has every reason in the world to be jealous of her.
