Operated on multiple fractures caused by an accident on his training routes, Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel revealed this Sunday that his shoulder injuries should, on the contrary, postpone his return to competition, hoped for in mid-April.
Remco Evenepoel strives to remain optimistic, but the 2022 world champion and 2024 Olympic champion is assailed by doubt. While he hoped to get back on the bike in official competition in mid-April, to participate in the Flèche Brabançonne, then continue with the Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, the plan did not go quite as he had. imagined in recent weeks.
“The doctor found that a nerve in my shoulder had been affected and that means that the muscle is not functioning 100%,” revealed Evenepoel at the Skyhall in Zaventem where he had just received his Belgian sportsman's trophy. this year, the fourth distinction of his young career. “The revalidation (rehabilitation, editor’s note) will therefore be longer than expected and longer than last year, after my fall at the Tour of the Basque Country.”
“I have time ahead of me”
Forced to have to observe a longer period of convalescence than expected, Remco Evenepoel seems determined to give himself the necessary time for healing, so as not to sacrifice his chances of doing well on the Grande Boucle. “I have time ahead of me. I know that I will return to my best level and I then hope to be able to give the best of myself in the Tour de France.”
Remco Evenepoel suffered multiple fractures for which he was operated after a serious accident during training in the Gooik region, northwest of Brussels, in early December. He was unable to avoid a Belgian post car, whose postwoman suddenly opened the door as he passed. In April 2024, Evenepoel was caught in a heavy collective fall at the Tour of the Basque Country. He was able to return to competition eight weeks later at the Critérium du Dauphiné.
