Through these meetings, the Dordogne Departmental Council, which has made environmental excellence the cornerstone of its policies, wanted to launch a reflection on the impacts and issues of travel which call into question current practices of tourist mobility .
Tourism is, in fact, responsible for 8% of GHG emissions globally, and the road remains the preferred mode of access for tourists, especially in rural areas. Hence the need to question the solutions to be implemented to reduce the environmental impact of tourism. There are, for example, alternative solutions to the car allowing you to come and get around in the Dordogne using public transport and soft mobility. A mode of tourism that the Department promotes through its “Dordogne without oil” program.
The sustainable tourism meetings aim to support the ecological transition of tourism activities, to reduce their impact on the environment, the territory and its inhabitants and to contribute to making the Dordogne a sustainable tourist destination.
To support the transition to sustainable tourism and meet the expectations of eco-sensitive customers, the Department's services carry out numerous actions, in particular through the departmental tourism committee (CDT24). This made it possible to set up, within the framework of an agreement with ADEME, awareness-raising actions on water or energy management, but also to strongly develop a soft roaming offer (PDIPR, cycle routes and greenways), etc. So many examples that were highlighted during the day.
For the record, the first edition of the “sustainable tourism meetings in Dordogne”, organized in 2022, was devoted to the theme: “sustainable tourism or how to transform constraints into opportunities”.
