To justify this decision, the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labor explains that the time available does not “allow him to mount the type of campaign” he would have liked to lead.

As a reminder, candidates for leadership must announce their participation in the race no later than January 23, 2025. And it is on March 9, 2025 that the name of the new party leader will be known.

“I admire all those who have considered, or are considering, entering the race. Liberals across the country have high expectations. It was energizing for me to listen and hear them. They deserve a real debate, a range of choices, and a clear direction for our country. Like them, I will listen carefully and make an informed choice,” added the minister in a statement on his social networks.

Furthermore, in this same press release, Steven MacKinnon confirms that he wants to run again in the riding of Gatineau.

Before him, ministers Dominic LeBlanc, Mélanie Joly and Anita Anand also decided not to embark on this race.

To date, the MP for Nepean, Chandra Arya, and the former MP for Pierrefonds—Dollard, Frank Baylis, are the only ones to have announced their wish to run.
