M. Harden won the nomination of the New Democratic Party (NDP) ahead of the other candidate, Vicky Smallman. The announcement was made late Sunday afternoon.

During the next federal election, Mr. Harden will try to dislodge Liberal MP Yasir Naqvi, in office since 2021.

Joel Harden was first elected in 2018 as a provincial deputy for NPD of Ontario for Ottawa Centre, then was re-elected in 2022.

He currently serves as opposition critic for public transit and active transportation. Mr. Harden is also a member of the Standing Committee on Heritage, Infrastructure and Culture at Queen’s Park.
