The OL women were eliminated on penalties in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France this Sunday on the pitch in Reims (0-0, 10-9 TAB). The worst result in the club’s history in the competition.
Big blow behind the head of Fenottes. Undefeated leader of the Arkema Premier League this season (11 wins, one draw), the OL women were knocked out as soon as they entered the fray, in the round of 16 of the Coupe de France following a session of unbearable shots on goal against Reims, 9th in the championship, after the failure of Rhone goalkeeper Laura Benkarth in her team’s eleventh attempt (0-0, 10-9 TAB). During the session, Ada Hegerberg also missed her face-to-face against Massey. OL have never experienced such an early elimination from the Coupe de France in their history.
OL can still dream of a double
Without Wendie Renard, Joe Montemurro’s players did not experience the same success as during the 2022-2023 season, where they eliminated Reims following penalties. On the contrary, they conceded their first defeat against the Rémoises, while until then they had had a record of thirteen victories in a row.
This surprise elimination is far from being an ideal preparation for the Lyonnaises, who travel to the Parc des Princes next Saturday to challenge PSG in the championship clash (9 p.m.). The most successful club in the Coupe de France (10 crowns), OL will not win for the second year in a row, after losing in the semi-final against Fleury last year.
Accustomed to dominating French football, the Fenottes can now only aim for a championship-Champions League double. Leader of the Arkema Premier League with five points ahead of PSG, OL are well placed to qualify for the playoffs. The club is also aiming for a 9th title in the Champions League, where the place for the quarter-finals is already validated.
