In the North and in Pas-de-Calais, on the morning of Saturday January 11, the ice was the cause of several pileups between Dunkirk and Lille. The A25 and the A26 had to be cut.
Saturday January 11, an imposing patch of ice left several trucks and cars sideways on the highway. On the A25 which links Lille to Dunkirk, two accidents took place in both directions, causing five minor injuries. Despite the salting operation, the roadway was transformed into an ice rink. Same scenario on the A26: around 7 a.m., rain fell and with the negative temperatures, a layer of ice formed.
Several accidents took place but no serious injuries were reported. A garage towed around sixty vehicles in total. “People wanted to get off the highway which was closed. They went through secondary roads which were also very bad today”explains Marine Buisine, co-manager of the repair company D. Buisine-Bois Grenier (Nord). In the Nord and Pas-de-Calais, motorists must be extra vigilant. Freezing fog and negative temperatures are forecast overnight and the next morning.
