Strasbourg: collision between two trams leaves 36 injured
(franceinfo)

It was around 3:30 p.m., in one of the busiest tram stations in Strasbourg, that two trams collided on Saturday January 11. The accident is believed to be due to a switching error and left 36 people injured in relative emergency.

The Strasbourg station (Bas-Rhin) was shaken by a scene of panic on the afternoon of Saturday January 11. Two trams collided. On the platform, passengers are lying on the ground, while others are running towards the exit. A man is trapped under the door of the train, injured. A group tries to rescue him. Injured people are evacuated, carried by passengers. The station hall is transformed into an emergency medical center. Outside, the survivors are in shock.

In front of the station, emergency services are being organized. Around 36 people were injured, but none are in life-threatening emergencies. “We had one or two broken collarbones, a sprained knee, a few injuries like that”indicates a firefighter. Switching or driving error? The only hypothesis ruled out is that of a voluntary act. An investigation was opened by the Strasbourg public prosecutor’s office to determine the exact causes of the accident. A tram had already hit another in the same place in 1998. The accident left 17 people injured.
